Gift of the Gods
Part 01

Eemty carefully entered the crashed Pelican. The human vessel had crashed into one of the steep cliffs after it suddenly had been blown out of the sky. Not by the Covenant, but something else. Maybe human forces shot it down after discovering the Flood had seized it? Whatever the reason was, Eemty was nervous.
"Is it the Flood?" Khal asked. His shiny silvery armor gleamed in the morning sun. If you could call it morning, on this artificial world.
"No, I can only see humans" Eemty answered and stepped over the body of a dead Marine. "It doesn't look like any of them survived either."
"Councilor! We should hurry. The Flood has been spotted not far from our position!" said one of the Black SpecOps of the team.

The little group of Unggoy and Kig-Yar where acting nervously, trying to hide behind the lone huge Lekgolo in front of them.
Pathetic - The Lekgolo thought and focused back on his mission, sweeping over the hillside with his eyes on the lookout for any enemy that could be.

Eemty looked down at the panels in the cockpit, showed the dead pilot off the controls and let her eyes stroll over the data. Nothing looked out of the ordinary.
A quiet moan caught here attention and she spun around with her Plasma Rifle ready. Nothing. She couldn't detect any life in the ship and her squad members where outside. The radar was only detecting her teammates.

Something moved in the dark corner and let out another moan. Eemty's pulse quickened. If it was the Flood, she would be in big trouble.
She carefully walked closer. Maybe it was just a half-dead Marine.
The creature moved again and halfway into the dim light. And what a surprise. Not the Flood, nor a Marine, but a small human. A human child!
Eemty snorted. To be scared by a human. She should be ashamed of herself.
It was still strapped to one of the seats along the ship hull. Long black hair covering its face, making it impossible for Eemty to see if it was awake or not. She lowered her rifle and checked the child’s pulse at its delicate neck. It was alive, but just nearly. Eemty wondered if she should just snap its neck, but she was struck by curiosity. What was the child doing here? Humans weren’t exactly known to bring their offspring into battle this early in life.

"What are you doing? We should leave this infested place." She almost jumped. Khal had entered the ship without her notice.
"A human child? Here?"he lowered the Plasma rifle he was holding.
"I'm as surprised as you" Eemty answered and unstrapped the child that fell right into her hands still unconscious. It was a girl. She wasn't dressed in the usual human clothes Eemty had seen so many times on countless dead humans on countless human colonies, but clothes that reminded her about the robes of the Prophets. A deep red color with gold ornaments along the edges.
“I am as surprised as you are, brother. But we could have some fun with her,"Eemty chuckled. So many times she had stripped humans of their weapons and forced them to fight Unggoy or Kig-Yar for the Sangheili's amusement.
"By the Rings! Look at that!" Khal pointed at the child’s back were the robe had slipped down on one of her shoulders. Green, glowing lines in a complicated pattern pulsated and threw a shimmering light at everything around it.
"It's ...It's a Forerunner symbol! She is marked by the Gods!" Eemty almost dropped the child in surprise. It took a couple of seconds before any of them said anything.
"What am I to do with it? It's a human, but I ...I can't kill it! I can't kill anything the Gods have marked!!!" Eemty was confused. This was something she had never encountered before. Eemty stood there with her mandibles loosely spread in awe.
"Calm down, dear sister. There must be a logic explanation to this." he pulled the robe further down to see the whole pattern. It looked almost as it was burned into her skin.
"Maybe we should take it with us, the Hierarchs should see this" Eemty said and lifted the girl up on her shoulders.
"I was thinking the same" Khal replied. "Now, let us get away from this place before the Parasite arrives!"

Outside, the sun had only moved a bit more over the distant hills on the edge of the artificial ring.
"Your Honor, we have lost all contact with the Phantoms. It seems a nearby storm is interfering with our signals!"a SpecOps said, fingering with his helmet com-link in a desperate try to get it up and running again.
"Then we should move quickly and try to reach higher ground,"Khal said and took lead, Eemty behind and the lone Lekgolo behind her again. The rest staggered after.

The Lekgolo had no problems traversing the deep snow, even though his massive weight made him sink deeper than his smaller and lighter teammates.
Eemty was impressed by this Lekgolo, his will to continue to fight even after the loss of his brother was truly impressive in her eyes. He became a personal bodyguard of Khal after the fight which cost the one brother’s life and almost killed the lekgolo, which his scarred armor told tales of.

"Why in the world are we bringing this human with us? We should leave it to freeze to death instead of tainting our selves with its presence!”The SpecOps Doln 'Kortimee said angrily while pointing at the child as he staggered through a thicket of pine trees, pushing snow-heavy branches aside.
"It is coming with us either you like it or not, Doln,"Eemty said almost angry for the SpecOps comment.
"She is clearly marked with symbols of our Gods and if someone is to see this, it must be the Council. We believe she can relieve some of the mysteries of the Gods for the Covenant."Khal said.
“Whatever. It’s still a human!”

They hadn't gone far before a snowstorm caught them. The weather control of the Ring was obviously malfunctioning and Eemty couldn't miss hearing Doln curse every tenth second about how cold it was and how bad the sight was. Doln wasn't the typical SpecOps. He was rude and often disobeyed orders. Eemty didn't understand how he managed to keep his title.
"The storm is getting worse. The Phantoms will not be able to land for at least two hours or so" Khal turned of his com and said:"We should find shelter. No use standing here, freezing our hooves off! And I believe that the human will succumb if we stay any longer in this cold." Snow covered their tracks quickly, leaving no trace of their presence behind. Eemty hoping, that at least it would be harder for the Flood to locate them that way.
"You're right. Ask if they have spotted any suitable places of retreat,"Eemty said and pulled the child’s robe around its body more tightly. She had almost forgotten about the child. Even tho Eemty and the squad was moving and wearing suits that preserved temperature, the child was unshielded against the elements.
Khal turned on his com again and soon they had the coordinates for the nearest suitable structure.

It was an ordinary Forerunner structure. Nothing special in Eemty's eyes. She placed the unconscious girl in one of the corners in the main octagonal room and sat down with her hooves tightly up to her own body next to the child. She removed her slightly ornamented helmet, the helmet of a guardian, and sighed deeply. The girl was cold and her hands had a bluish tone. But the room was warm so hopefully that would be enough.

This creature, so fragile, started to fascinate Eemty. Was she really marked by the Gods or was she just an abomination? And why was she the only human surviving the crash? She was in deep thought, a common feature with her, when Khal disrupted her: "There's only one entrance here and we have good sight from the door. The Flood will have a hard time fighting us here if they ever find us. Is she still alive?" he kneeled in front of the girl and moved some of the black tufts of hair away from her face. She was still breathing.
"I've been thinking, dear sister, if it's wise to bring this child, this so called Sin, to High Charity?"
"I'm thinking the same, honorable brother. If she is of no value to our research, this might be costly, but alas... this might be my last chance to regain my title of honor"she said and stared out in the empty, placing her tilted head on her knees.
"Before you “retire”... Are you sure about this, dear sister?"
"I want to settle and find a mate. Then maybe I will be granted the opportunity of studying the Forerunners. I'm tired of war..."she sighed.
"Don't worry, the humans won't withstand much longer and the path into the Divine will stand open for us. They are no match to us," He smiled and placed a hand on her shoulder. She replied with a faint smile.

"What am I doing here?"The low voice caught them both off guard. Two blue eyes stared at them both with a curious look.
"It's awake!"Khal was quickly on his feet.
"She talked ...in Sangheili!!!" Eemty was so surprised she almost tipped over.
"Impossible!” The other Covenant in the room turned around in attention of the ruckus.
The child silently rubbed her eyes with the sleeve of the robe and yawned. "Who are you?"
"How come you talk our holy language with such ease, Human?!!!"It was a bit of irritation in his voice. This sin was mocking his culture by speaking words she was not worthy of.
She blinked, like as if he had asked her an obvious question.
W00t! My first fanfic evarr!!! ...It kinda sucks <.< And it's pretty short. Expect more chapters soon.

This story is placed in th events that occured right after the Covenant discovery of the Intallation 05.
In other words, Khal, as the Councilor he is, is sent to ring to be the first to grace the Forerunner structure with his blessing and lead the rest of the covenant to the Library on the Holy Ring. And to take care of eventual humans or parasitic encounters before the main forces move in. Sounds kinda risky maybe? Well yeah, but the Hierarchs wants to make sure everything is going exactly after the religious codex that was not followed last time on Installation 04.

Eemty comes with him by two reasons: 1) As she once was a minor female Councilor she would be a rather useful escort. 2) Khal is her brother and there is no way she would let him barge into Flood infested areas without proper backup(she sees herself as quite the guardian).

Um yeah, I know my english is not perfect. After all, I am from Norway and I've never been good at writing my own stories, but I really wanted to write this one. So if you see any errors, both gramatically and word wise, you just have to live with it^^
